What It’s Actually Like Flying Over Tenerife By Helicopter

I’ve filmed a fair few excursions on this island, but the helicopter tour is still one of the ones people ask me about the most. I took the full island route myself, camera running, and I’ll be honest with you about how it actually went, because the flight didn’t go quite to plan on the day I filmed it, and I think that’s worth knowing before you book.

The Route, And Why Weather Matters More Than You’d Think

This is a full island loop, around 45 minutes when conditions play ball. The route bends around cloud cover near Teide, and that’s the bit worth setting your expectations on. The crew won’t fly through cloud, full stop, so if it’s socked in up there on the day, you might not get the classic Teide shot. I didn’t, on my flight. It stung a bit in the moment, but the rest of the route more than made up for it.

Los Gigantes And The Coastline

The Los Gigantes cliffs are the moment that actually got me. You know they’re big when you’re stood at the bottom looking up, but from the air the scale hits differently. The coastline colour shift from deep blue to turquoise, the resorts looking like tiny model villages, that’s the part no ground tour gives you.

Costa Adeje From Above, And The Ravines

Flying over Costa Adeje, I kept spotting spots I recognised from ground level, then seeing how they actually connect to everything around them. And if there’s been recent rain, the ravine sections can show water running through them, which genuinely looks like something out of a film when you’re flying low through the terrain.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, but go in treating Teide as a bonus rather than the whole reason you’re booking. Even with my route shifted by cloud, the cliffs, coastline and ravines still made it one of the best things I’ve filmed on the island. If seeing Teide snow is the entire reason you want to book, pick a flexible time slot and know that cloud can still change the plan on the day.

A Few Things I’d Tell You Before You Book

  • Bring your passport or ID. There’s a safety video and an ID check before you fly, no exceptions.
  • If you’re booking mainly for Teide snow, pick a flexible slot and mentally prepare for the route to change.
  • If you get a choice of seat, sit at the front. You’re closer to the view and can see straight down.
  • Nerves before takeoff are completely normal. I felt them too. The crew fly within strict safety limits, and most people are glad they went once they’re up.

Common Questions

How long is the Tenerife Helicopter Tour?

Around 45 minutes when the full route is flyable.

Will I definitely see Teide snow?

Not guaranteed. It depends on the season and cloud cover on the day, but the rest of the scenery still delivers even when Teide’s out of view.

What happens if it’s cloudy near Teide?

The crew route around it rather than fly through cloud, so you’ll usually get more coastline and ravine flying time instead.

I’m nervous about flying, is this still for me?

Most people who feel nervous beforehand end up enjoying it once they’re airborne. The flight is short and the crew are strict on safety.

What do I need to bring?

Your passport or ID. You’ll go through a quick safety check and safety video before boarding.
